TESSA M PILATES
FAQS
How is Pilates different from yoga?
Yoga and Pilates both use breath-work, mindfulness, body awareness as part of these two practices. Both use the connection of body & mind to develop the physical strength & control to advance through a sequence of poses & transitions.
Despite their similarities, the two practices are far from interchangeable.
Yoga is a spiritual system that has roots in Indian spiritual and cultural traditions. The physical practice of poses only one aspect of a much larger system of practices designed to purify & energize the practitioner's mental, physical and spiritual being. The ultimate goal is to merge the individual spirit with universal consciousness.
Pilates is a much newer practice, founded in 1925 by Joseph Pilates with the goal of physically rehabilitating weakened soldiers following WW1. While it has expanded in scope, the concepts of core strengthening, improving skeletal and muscular alignment & balancing the body through postural awareness still inform the practice of Pilates today.
What is the difference between Mat & Reformer Pilates?

While you can perform the same series of exercises on the reformer that you can on the mat, the workouts feel a little different. Mat classes utilise the body weight for exercises, while the Reformer adds (or subtracts) resistance to the Pilates exercises via the use of the springs that form part of the machine. Both work the whole body & mind using Pilates exercises & principles.
Do you have a late cancellation fee?
Do I need to bring a Mat or any other equipment to class?
We have mats and equipment for you to use, however if you would prefer to use your own mat or double up with your own mat on ours you are more than welcome.
Please feel free to bring water, your own towel & grip socks if you prefer these over bare feet. You are welcome to attend classes without these also.
Is there an age limit for babies at 'Plus Bubs' classes?
We recommend babies in these classes to be 12 months or under, suitability will also depend on how mobile your baby is.
If you have any questions or want to discuss this please contact us!
I am pre and post natal, however cannot make it to the pre & post natal plus bubs class. Can I come to the other Pilates classes?
Yes you can! The pre & post natal classes are planned with this specificity in mind, however variations can be given if you are in Full Body all levels classes.
Please let Tessa know before class if you are pre/post natal & the details of this (how many weeks pre/post etc). If you are planning to come back to exercise post baby & haven't yet, we ask that you book in with a women's health physio (or your regular physio if you have been seeing one regularly) to get the all clear to start exercising.
Please note you may be given different variations of exercises to other people in the class depending on where you are at in your pre/post natal journey.
